Meet OGC Mission Fund Recipient: Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides

The Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticide’s (NCAP) work is more important now than ever. They are on a mission to protect community and environmental health and inspire the use of ecologically friendly solutions to reduce the use of pesticides.

NCAP works to tackle pest problems without using pesticides that harm our health, wildlife, soil, water and the air we breathe. NCAP is focused on healthy homes and yards, thriving ecosystems, pesticide-free food and farming, safe and pesticide-free workplaces/institutions and the climate crisis. On their site, pesticide.org, you can find resources for things like how to create a healthy habitat in your own yard, choosing a landscaping company, finding nurseries and more.

NCAP protects farm workers through programs like their Farm Worker Education Project which teaches about pesticides, alternatives, drift, climate change, community health and more. They also run a Spanish-language radio show geared towards farm workers that brings experts who speak on topics like the climate crisis, community health and immunizations.

In 2024, Organically Grown Company (OGC) gave NCAP an unrestricted Mission Fund grant that they’re planning to use to support their educational radio show.

“In all our work, we try to focus on solutions that get as close as possible to having little to no use of toxic pesticides or chemicals.” Communications Manager at NCAP, Alisa Howell-Smith, shared. “If we lived in a world where organic farming was the norm, farm workers wouldn’t need resources to protect them from the devastating effects of toxic pesticides. Every dollar helps us protect our community and environment.”

OGC’s Mission Fund Grant Program helps build equity in our regional farm and food system, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and more. Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides is just one of the many organizations the Mission Fund supported in 2024. Find a list of all our 2024 grant recipients here.
