Squeeze Something Good

Demand for citrus is strong with varieties flying off the shelf quickly. As shoppers continue to fill their carts with healthy favorites to fuel their feel-good new year routines, now’s the perfect time to encourage them to explore the full citrus category through juicing! From familiar favorites like oranges and grapefruits to more specialty varietal citrus, there are plenty of terrific flavors to squeeze out of the season right now.

Get them juiced up!

Whether looking to squeeze a tall glass of traditional orange juice or fill a tumbler with something a little more adventurous, it’s a great time for creatively flavoring cocktails and mocktails alike with a healthy dose of citrus.

Every citrus varietal touts a fat free, saturated fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free squeeze. They’re also all an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect cells against free radical damage, maintain healthy skin, bones and teeth and immune system and helps the body absorb iron from plant sources. Eaters can take it up a notch by adding grapefruit to the mix as a great source of vitamin A, which helps maintain the immune system and is needed for normal function of heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs as well as eye and skin health.

There are certainly obvious choices when it comes to squeezing a tasty glass of citrus juice. Navel orange is a classic choice, and Cara Cara is a tasty and colorful fresh twist. While most shoppers might not think of mandarin varieties as go-to’s for juicing, what they lack in size they beyond make up for in taste. When mixed with more tart varieties of grapefruit, sweet mandarin juice can help create balance. Encourage shoppers to try both single variety juices and a combination of a few to develop dynamic colors and flavors.

Cocktails and mocktails can give more obscure varieties their moment in the spotlight. Since many specialty drinks require a smaller volume of juice, it’s a great opportunity for shoppers to pick up just a piece for experimenting. The balanced, yet intensely grapefruit-y flavor of the Rio Star grapefruit immediately comes to mind. While the highly aromatic Marmalade orange may be too acidic for some to enjoy fresh, it can really shine in a cocktail with a splash of simple syrup. Moro blood orange is great as a single variety of fresh juice and a little can go a long way in a cocktail to add a punch of color. Get shoppers excited to think beyond just the juice and use the whole fruit to enhance flavor. A twist of Variegated Pink Lemon adds something unexpected.
