Viva Farms, OGC Mission Fund Recipient, Works to Keep Farmers Farming

Viva Farms is one of the largest and most robust farm incubator programs in the country. Based in western Washington, this nonprofit helps new farmers get started by offering access to land, training and the resources they need to build sustainable, organic farms. They’re all about empowering the next generation of farmers, especially those from underrepresented communities.

Why Viva Farms Is So Important

  • Viva makes it easier for people to get into farming by offering land, tools, and training tailored to each farm in both English and Spanish.

  • Every farmer at Viva grows organically. Whether they’re starting with Viva’s certification or working toward their own, they’re rooted in sustainability from day one.

  • Traditional land access is tough these days. Viva is working on creative ways to help farmers secure long-term land, making sure they can build businesses that last.

  • By training new farmers, Viva is helping create a stronger, more equitable local food system.

Right now, Viva Farms is facing a tough time. Until recently, they operated with approximately 70% federal funding. But this year, because of nationwide budget freezes and delays, they’ve lost $5.5 million in federal funding since January—jeopardizing their ability to provide training, land access and critical support services. In response, they’ve pivoted to private fundraising to keep their operations running and prepare for a more resilient future.

“Our community came together to prevent layoffs and keep programs going,” said Elma Burnham, Viva Farms’ communications manager. “Now we’re focused on sustaining the future of the organization. Every gift helps us continue to lower barriers for beginning farmers and grow the next generation of organic agriculture.”

Viva farmers are among OGC’s suppliers of a springtime favorite, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, and OGC was proud to support Viva Farms through our Mission Fund grant program this year. If you’d like to support Viva Farms, you can donate here.
